Minor Eye Conditions Service
(MECS)

We are delighted to be participating in the NHS ‘Minor Eye Conditions Scheme’ (MECS).

MECS makes it more convenient for people registered with GPs in Lambeth, Southwark and Lewisham, to quickly access NHS treatment for a range of eye conditions. Through the scheme, you can be seen quickly, by a specifically accredited optometrist at your local opticians, rather than having to wait for a hospital appointment. You will also have access to specialist eye care equipment, which is unavailable through most GPs.
During your consultation, your optometrist will discuss your symptoms, recent eye history and any related medical history. You will then either receive treatment from your optometrist, be referred to your GP (if your symptoms relate to your general health), or to hospital if your eye condition is more serious.
This service is currently available for adults and children who are registered with a GP within the two primary care trusts of Lambeth and Lewisham.
